You've seen the letters. MIPS, SPIN, WaveCel. They all claim to add protection. Here's what they actually do.

MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System) is a thin yellow or black liner inside the helmet that allows the outer shell to rotate 10–15 mm relative to your head on angled impacts. Real-world ski falls rarely hit perfectly straight down — they come in at angles. MIPS is designed to absorb that rotational energy, which some studies link to reduced concussion risk. It's not a concussion cure, but the science behind it is solid.

SPIN (by POC) uses a similar approach with a different pad geometry. WaveCel (by Bontramer) is a cellular structure that claims to handle both linear and rotational forces. Both are legitimate alternatives. There's no clear winner in third-party testing.
