Base Layers

A base layer decides whether the rest of your kit works. If it holds sweat against your skin, you get cold the moment you stop moving, no matter how good your jacket is. NANEND base layers are built around two materials: superfine merino wool developed with AWEX, and high-stretch Lycra compression fabric - both chosen for fast moisture transfer rather than bulk.

Why merino wool for skiing

Merino regulates temperature across a wider range than synthetic equivalents: it traps air when you are cold and moves vapour away when you are working hard. It is naturally odour-resistant, which matters on multi-day trips when you are wearing the same layer three days running. Our AWEX collaboration range uses superfine merino fine enough to sit directly against skin without itch.

Compression and zone knitting

KnitzoneX gradient compression targets support where the muscles work hardest - calves, thighs and lower back - while staying loose where you need to move. For skiers who spend long days on groomed runs or tour uphill, that support reduces fatigue and keeps the fabric in contact with the skin so it can do its job.

Lycra and technical synthetics

Where maximum stretch and quick drying matter more than natural fibre, our Lycra compression sets deliver: antibacterial finishes, flatlock seams and a fit that stays put under a shell. They are also the easier option for kids, who rarely want to be careful with wool.

How to layer under a ski suit

Base layer directly on skin, mid-layer over the top for insulation, then your jacket and pants. In mild conditions the base layer and shell alone are often enough. If you feel cold at the start of the day, that is normal - you will warm up on the first run. Damp base layers should go straight in the wash; merino dries fast and does not need fabric softener.
